Manners & Gaming (a four part series): Part Two, The Game Itself

posted 2 years ago

Last time, we discussed the basic mannerisms used in the setup of any game (mainly in a tournament setting). Today, we will move to the actual flow of game play itself and learn what to and not to do. One thing to keep in mind though, never force any of these “manners”. Anybody will be able to tell if you are trying to fake a nice personality, and that is about as rude as being rude itself. Without further to do, let us begin then:

  1. Make Casual Conversation - Even if it is the final match in a national tournament, there is no need to be completely serious while sitting there. Its always fun to get to know your opponent through the game you love playing, and you can even make a new friend.
  2. Don’t Complain - This is normally a problem with the younger players. They will sit there and complain about the draw and the move they just did. Rather than complaining and feeling about whatever just happened in the game; learn about that mistake, forget about it, and move on with the game. It will make both players experience more enjoyable.
  3. Ask Before Touching - Your opponent may at some point play a card that you have never seen before. In this situation ask kindly if you may see it to know what it does, never under any circumstances touch an opponent’s cards without permission.
  4.  Don’t Get Cocky - If you start to claim victory in the game you are playing, never show it by talking down to your opponent. No one likes to be insulted, especially while playing a game.
  5. Be Kind to Younger Players - Never insult their intelligence by acting like you are smarter than them, who knows they might be the next world champion. However, if you do notice something severe in their play style, then feel free to offer some friendly advice. But never, lecture a younger player, that will only distract them for someday becoming a serious player in the game.
  6. Be Patient - This is a common occurrence that happens at most every tournament. There will be that one player sitting there impatiently asking questions like “Are you done?” and “Is it my turn?”. You’re already there to have fun and you aren’t going anywhere soon so sit back, relax and enjoying the game. Don’t be that one annoying impatient player.
  7. Give Time for a Response - Going with the patience idea, don’t rush through your moves. Your opponent is allowed the opportunity to counter your cards with theirs and so on, so be kind and allow the time to respond. Its also good to ask questions like “Do you wish to respond?” after you play a card.
  8.  Have Fun - This is a game after all, so enjoy it. You’re playing it for one reason, because you like it right? So just sit back and enjoy the games to come.

This concludes part two of the Manners Series. Tomorrow we’ll discuss the Post Game Rituals. Until then, keep on gaming.
