First Look: Summoner Wars (I’m Back Baby!!)

posted 2 years ago

Now in the past few weeks, I have been looking for a card game to play that isn’t just the same old Magic style of game play of summoning creatures with Mana, attacking, and lowering opponent’s life points. Now don’t get me wrong, Magic is a great game but its nice to play something new and innovative and I believe I just found something. A friend led me onto this game called Summoner Wars, and in short its basically a board game combined with a card game and it is really mind blowing.

Summoner Wars is a two to four player game that allows for players to take on the role of a powerful summoner character and create an army to take out the enemy. Using things like events, walls, and abilities you can summon your forces more easily or make it more difficult for your opponent. The artwork for the cards looks amazing and the design of the cards themselves looks very professional. The game play is a basic mini’s style that involves forces moving and attacking by rolling certain numbers of dice listed in the top corner of each card. The game ends when your summoner card is defeated, which sounds simple at first but turns out to be a difficult task if you play strategically. By taking two cliché game play styles (the summoning from magic and the mini’s from any basic miniature game) you get a product that turns out to be extremely unique  in its own way.

The great thing about this game though is that the company is putting so much support behind it, so an OP should be hopeful in the future. If you need proof of this, the company runs the Facebook fan page for Summoner Wars and updates frequently, which is a nice touch. Plus with new expansions coming out soon, this is a nice addition to your cliché card games that are just money sinkers. If you like innovation as much as I do, then check your local card shop for a copy of Summoner Wars today!
